Tucked away in the heart of Covent Garden, Le Garrick offers a transportive slice of Parisian charm without leaving the city. Celebrating four decades in business this year, it would have been rude not to pay it a visit.

From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere that felt unmistakably French – low lighting, rich wood, and a series of intimate nooks perfect for everything from a quiet dinner for two to a lively gathering with friends. The ambience strikes that elusive balance: moody yet welcoming, elegant yet unpretentious. With attentive French waiters gliding between tables, the experience felt authentic rather than staged.
We began with what the menu modestly describes as a “snack”: bread and butter (£4.50). Simple though it sounds, it set the tone beautifully – fresh, crusty bread paired with silky butter that was impossible to resist. Starters followed, and each one impressed. The Noix de St Jacques (£10.75) were perfectly cooked scallops, delicate and sweet, while the pâté de campagne maison (£8) delivered a rich, rustic depth of flavour that felt both comforting and refined. Every bite suggested care, confidence, and a respect for classic French technique.
For mains, we opted for two contrasting but equally satisfying dishes. The confit de canard et pomme purée (£26.00) was everything you’d hope for: tender, deeply flavoured duck with crisped skin, paired with smooth, buttery mash that soaked up every ounce of its richness. Alongside it, the faux filet rib eye (£29.50) – a generous 225g cut – was cooked perfectly rare, full of character and complemented beautifully by a classic Béarnaise and golden French fries.
Dessert was a must, and the crème brûlée (£9.00) did not disappoint: a satisfyingly crisp caramel top giving way to a silky, vanilla-rich custard beneath. An Americano (£3) rounded things off neatly, providing a gentle, bitter counterpoint to the sweetness.
To drink, a glass of Clos du Colombier, Cahors Malbec AOC (£12.00 for 175ml), recommended by our waiter, proved an excellent choice – bold, smooth, and the perfect partner to both duck and steak.
There’s also a certain understated glamour to Le Garrick. During our visit, we even spotted a political celebrity quietly enjoying their meal – proof that this is somewhere you can dine well and discreetly, without fuss or intrusion.
Le Garrick is more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience. Authentic, atmospheric, and consistently delicious, it’s a place we’ll gladly return to.
