The River Thames flows through some of the most beautiful towns in England, and one of the real pleasures of following the river is discovering how each place has its own personality.

From the gentle countryside near the source to the elegant riverside districts closer to London, the Thames Valley is full of towns that seem to invite you to slow down, look around and stay a little longer than you planned.

OXFORD
Oxford is known all over the world, yet when you see it from the river it feels surprisingly peaceful. The Thames, often called the Isis here, winds past college buildings, meadows and boathouses, giving the city a softer side that many visitors never expect. The Covered Market is always worth visiting, and you can easily move from historic streets to modern shops such as Uniqlo without the city losing its character.

Thames Life Tip
If you are visiting Oxford, allow time to explore on foot. The Covered Market and the riverside walks show a completely different side of the city.

HENLEY-ON-THAMES
Henley feels exactly how people imagine a Thames town should feel, with independent shops, cafés and a relaxed riverside atmosphere. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts says it is one of her favourite places along the river. “It has that perfect mix of tradition and style, and some of my favourite gift shops and boutiques are in Henley.”

Thames Life Tip
Try parking outside the centre and walking in. The town feels far more relaxed when you arrive on foot.

MARLOW
Marlow has a similar charm, with its bridge, riverside walks and lively high street. Jennifer says, “Marlow always feels welcoming. You go for a short visit and end up staying much longer than you planned.”

Thames Life Tip
Walk across the bridge and follow the river path for some of the best views on the Thames.

WINDSOR
Windsor is famous for the castle, but the river gives the town its real character, with parks, walks and quieter corners away from the busiest streets.

Thames Life Tip
Parking in Windsor can be expensive, so check locations in advance or use park and ride where possible.

RICHMOND
Richmond shows how the Thames brings calm even close to London. The riverside, the park and the famous hill view make it one of the most enjoyable places along the river.

Thames Life Tip
Walk from Richmond Hill down to the river rather than driving. The view is part of the experience.

KINGSTON UPON THAMES
Kingston mixes modern life with history, and the river remains at the centre of the town’s character.

Thames Life Tip
Follow the riverside rather than the main shopping streets to see Kingston at its best.

READING
Reading surprises many visitors. Walk beside the river and you find quieter paths and places to sit that feel far removed from the busy centre.

Thames Life Tip
Look for the river paths away from the main roads to find the most peaceful spots.

FULHAM
Fulham shows another side of the Thames, with elegant houses, riverside pubs and streets that feel relaxed despite being close to central London.

Thames Life Tip
Stay close to the river when exploring Fulham. Many of the best places are right beside the water.
